Discover the magic of Prague, Budapest, and Vienna at a leisurely pace on this Central Europe tour that also includes time in Nuremberg and Bratislava, and overnights in Munich and Salzburg. Along the way, enjoy beautiful scenery both from land and from the water on the included cruise on the Danube River in the Wachau region. Relax as you glide by spectacular vineyards and charming villages. On this tour through Central Europe, you’ll also discover the Vienna Woods, a branch of the foothills of the Alps and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Spend three nights in Prague, and enjoy a guided sightseeing tour, including Charles Bridge, dating to 1357 and one of Europe’s oldest stone bridges, and the Astronomical Clock, built in 1410 with a sinister medieval figure of death that emerges to pull the bell cord. During your free time, you may want to visit Prague’s Hradcany Castle, dating back to the 9th century; further explore the Jewish Quarter; or join an optional excursion. Before arriving in Budapest, where you’ll spend three nights, stop in Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital. This medieval old town sits on the banks of the Danube.

In Budapest, sightseeing includes Heroes' Square, founded in 1896 and representing 1,000 years of Hungarian history, and a scenic walk to Fishermen’s wharf; in your free time, perhaps explore the Buda Castle District; purchase local specialties at the Central Market Hall, an indoor farmers’ market; or relax in one of the historic liberty-style spas. Your three nights in Vienna and sightseeing include a stroll in Heroes’Square to view the Hofburg, the palatial complex at the heart of Vienna. In your spare time, you may want to visit one of the many palaces and museums, take an optional excursion, or just relax at a coffee house enjoying some Sacher cake. In Salzburg, your guided sightseeing includes a walk along charming Getreidegasse, where Mozart was born.

Day 1

ARRIVE IN MUNICH, GERMANY. Check into your hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore Munich. Tonight, meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers.

Day 2

MUNICH–NUREMBERG–PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC. First, stop in Nuremberg, famous for its World War II war crime trials. See the picturesque Market Square and the castle towering above the city center. Later, cross the border into the Czech Republic and on to Prague. (B)

Day 3

PRAGUE. The city has a wealth of gothic and baroque architecture that perhaps inspired Dvorak and Smetana, both Prague composers. The included guided sightseeing features landmarks such as the Jewish Quarter, Charles Bridge, and the Old Town Square with the ASTRONOMICAL CLOCK. Plenty of time for some individual exploring, or maybe just a walk along the banks of the Vltava River and then a meal at a restaurant of your choice. Your second day in Prague will give you a program of optional excursions or, if you prefer, the opportunity for arranging your own day with visits to places of particular personal interest. PRAGUE–BRATISLAVA, SLOVAKIA–BUDAPEST, HUNGARY. Journey southeast into Slovakia and stop in its capital, Bratislava, to see the medieval Old Town, situated on the banks of the Danube. Next, cross into Hungary to reach Budapest, where tonight you will enjoy an included dinner in a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 6

BUDAPEST. Included sightseeing features Buda Castle, which dominates the twin cities of Buda and Pest that are separated by the broad ribbon of the Danube. Also, see Heroes’ Square, which typifies the modern capital, the old inns, and along the riverbank, Parliament, Margaret Island, Fishermen’s Bastion, and Buda Castle. There’s plenty more to do and see during these two days. Maybe try one of the historic spas! Ask your Tour Director for assistance. (B daily)

Day 7

BUDAPEST. Included sightseeing features Buda Castle, which dominates the twin cities of Buda and Pest that are separated by the broad ribbon of the Danube. Day 8

BUDAPEST–VIENNA WOODS, AUSTRIA–VIENNA. Say goodbye to Budapest and cross into Austria. Drive to the Vienna Woods, designated a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. In Mayerling, see the hunting lodge, scene of the tragic 1889 death of Archduke Rudolf and his 17-year-old lover, Maria Vetsera. Later, continue to Vienna for the next three nights. (B)

VIENNA. Two whole days to fully enjoy one of Europe’s best known and most loved capitals. Whatever your plans, it is wise to start off with the included city sightseeing tour. See the State Opera, Parliament, and the Town Hall. Stroll in Heroes’ Square to view the Hofburg. Splendid baroque palaces and the Viennese traditional joie de vivre give great scope for a program of optional excursions. Your stay is long enough to fit in your personal plans and choices. VIENNA. Two whole days to fully enjoy one of Europe’s best known and most loved capitals. Whatever your plans, it is wise to start off with the included city sightseeing tour. Day 11

VIENNA–DANUBE RIVER CRUISE–SALZBURG. Another day with some interesting options. Drive first to Krems on the banks of the Danube and surrounded by hills and vineyards. Then, something quite different: enjoy a CRUISE on the Danube River, taking in the beautiful Wachau region. Maybe join an optional excursion to visit the abbey at Melk before continuing the journey to Salzburg. Tonight, savor an included traditional dinner in a local restaurant. (B,D)

Day 12

SALZBURG–MUNICH, GERMANY. Don’t miss out on the included Salzburg city sightseeing excursion with a Local Guide. You’ll be taken through the historic center of Mozart’s hometown to see its many highlights, including the Domplatz, the Horse Trough, Festival Hall, and, of course, the charming Getreidegasse, where Mozart was born. Continue to Munich and this evening, maybe join the optional Bavarian evening and farewell dinner. (B)
