This fascinating European tour covers Central and Eastern Europe, focusing on the monumental architecture, history, and traditions of the former Prussian and Austro-Hungarian Empires. You’ll spend two nights each in Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and Berlin, and an overnight in Brussels, the Frankfurt area, and Salzburg. Guided sightseeing of the must-see attractions includes Vienna’s Parliament, built between 1873 and 1883; Budapest’s Parliament, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of the world’s most beautiful parliament buildings; Prague’s Old Town Square and Astronomical Clock, built in 1410 with a sinister medieval figure of death who emerges to pull the bell cord; and Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, dating to 1791. Stop in Trier, Germany’s oldest city with its lovely market square and Roman ruins; Nuremberg, with its charming, pedestrian Old Town and impressive medieval ramparts; Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital; and Dresden, a splendid baroque city restored after its almost total destruction during air bombings in 1945. One highlight of this Central Europe tour is a drive along the shores of the Rhine River (or you can opt for a scenic cruise). Admire the countryside dotted with quaint villages and towns, hilltop castles from the Middle Ages, and terraced vineyards. Other scenery you’ll see includes a journey through the Salzkammergut lakelands near Salzburg, made famous in the Sound of Music movie. Drive through a vast stretch of Hungary’s Lake Balaton area, Central Europe’s largest lake, with some quaint towns and summer resorts. Near the Germany and Czech Republic border, travel through the mountains in the Erzgebirge range, known for its forests and production of wooden German folk art, such as Christmas nutcrackers. From the vibrant capital cities to the beautiful scenery, this Central European tour designed for value-minded travelers is sure to be a hit!
